Overview

Another of the “don’t miss” dive sites in Raja Ampat is Mioskon. The dive site gets it’s name from the island Mioskon, located at the east end of the Dampier Strait in central Raja Ampat. It’s a V shaped reef surrounding the island of Mioskon.

It’s actually a long ridge that runs to the south east of the island and forms a slopping reef that runs down to a sandy bottom at 25 meters. As well as the amazing reef, plenty of bommies are scattered over the sandy bottom.

The Visibility

The Marine Life

For the fish life, you will find plenty of Wobbegong Sharks camouflaged amongst the reef and under the bommies.

You’ll find Yellow Snapper, Yellowtail and Blue Lined Snappers massive Groupers, Napoleon Wrasse, Jacks, Fusiliers, Sweetlips, Bump Head Parrot Fish, Pagoda Fish, Butterfly Fish, Angel Fish, Damselfish, Surgeon Fish and Batfish.

In fact, this was the first place I saw a juvenile Batfish, with its striking contrasting colours of a black body and brilliant orange lining.

For the macro, you can find Pontohi Pygmy Seahorses, Dennis Pygmy Seahorses, Nudibranchs, Peacock Mantis Shrimp and Blue Ring Octopus.

As the island is surrounded by a coral ridge, this makes this a nice easy dive. The best part of this dive is on the southeastern tip, so we will start our dive based on the current at the time which will take us to this point.

The Diving

We will drop in with a positive entry and make our way down to the bottom of the reef at 25 meters. We will not stay at this depth too long though, as most of the best parts of this dive are around the 12 to 7 meter depth. Another reason why this dive is so nice and easy is it is shallow.

This is the depth that we will find most of the soft and hard coral living and the reef and coral gardens teeming with life. When we hit the 9 meter mark at the coral garden there is a huge Giant Clam which is cool to check out. We will end the dive after an hour with a nice, sheltered cruise around the coral garden. Looking up from here you can often see a snorkeller or two, as this site is also perfect for them having some great reef at just 2 meters depth.
